Your Dream Staycation

Okay Toronto – summer weather is finally here – really!  I know, because I haven’t worn my parka to stand in line for groceries in over a week now!

Even though we are all starting to feel some relief at the sign of sun and double-digit temperatures, we have been home now for literally months – maybe you’ve been working from home, or you’re experiencing a temporary layoff  — but whatever your situation I’m guessing you’ve seen a whole lot of your home lately.

Now that summer is on the precipice, the mind wanders to thoughts of vacation.  Vacation?  What vacation?!  Well, the vacation you are probably going to spend at home this year.  Your staycation.  That’s right, we are ALL going to be on staycation this year.  So why not make the most of it?

If the thought of spending your holidays in the same place you’ve been self-isolating is a little off-putting, here are a few things that might make the idea somewhat more appealing:

  • Canadians spend on average, $2,573 a year on vacations, making travel one of the single largest annual expenditures – and they often will go into debt to pay for them
  • Canadians also spend an average of over $13,000 on home renovations and when it comes to their outdoor spaces, they can spend up to $17,000 on a major landscaping job

So, the question I have is, why not make the most of the investment you’ve already made into your own home?

As parks and beaches open slowly through the COVID-19 crisis, I believe that people will do the right thing and remain cautious, and that means striking a balance between public spaces and your own private outdoors.  It also means that some elements of a typical staycation – dining out, galleries and museums and movie theatres — may not be an option here in the GTA.  With that in mind, here are some ideas to ensure you have the best staycation you can this summer.

BBQ with the Best

Make sure that your barbeque is adorned with the best quality, locally sourced, farm fresh meats.  Personally, I’m a huge fan of truLocal ( They deliver superior quality, sustainable meats from Ontario farms right to your door.

Find the Perfect Pairing

As the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei once said, “Wine is sunlight, held together by water”.  It’s your staycation – so get inspired by one of the best in the business – Shari Mogk-Edwards of Sharispx (  From burgundy to bubbles, she is the go-to source for great wine ideas.

Take Out a Treat

I don’t know about you, but I’m doing so much cooking lately that I tingle with excitement on order-in nights.  A simple pizza does the trick under normal circumstances, but this is your staycation – so make it special! Of course, there are so many amazing restaurants in the GTA it can be hard to choose, so I’ll recommend one that we love for special occasions.  The Lord Nelson Steakhouse in Burlington (  is a family-owned restaurant serving the Golden Horseshoe since 1974.  They have the best quality meats and fresh seafood available, and they have been actively offering curb-side pickup and delivery through the health crisis.  My go-to favourite is the decadent Shrimp Lady Hamilton – I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Relax and Recline

Your staycation, like any vacation, should ultimately be about relaxation.  Comfort should blend with style and it does with Coco’s Home and Patio ( in Vaughan.  This long established, family owned business wants to help you create the outdoor space of your dreams.  Their beautiful showroom is open 7 days a week and they’ve got some fabulous specials on right now!

Whatever you choose to do on your dream staycation, I hope that it brings you and your family some respite and much-needed fun as we continue to navigate these challenging times #alonetogether.
